The Lord's Prayer Explained: A Line-by-Line Guide

2026-03-02

When the disciples asked Jesus how to pray, He didn't give them a theology lecture. He gave them a prayer. Simple. Direct. Powerful. And we've been reciting it for two thousand years — sometimes without stopping to think about what we're actually saying.

Let's slow down and really look at it.

Our Father in Heaven, Hallowed Be Your Name

Right out of the gate, Jesus tells us to call God "Father." Not "Your Majesty" or "O Great and Terrible One." Father. It's intimate. Personal. And it sets the tone for everything that follows — this is a conversation with someone who loves you.

PRAYERFather, I come to You not as a stranger but as Your child. Your name is holy — set apart from everything else in my life. Help me treat it that way. Not just in church, but in my kitchen, my car, my office. Everywhere.— Matthew 6:9

Your Kingdom Come, Your Will Be Done

This is the hardest line to mean. Because what you're really saying is: "I want what You want more than what I want." And most days, that's terrifying.

PRAYERGod, I'm asking for Your kingdom to come — in my city, my home, my own stubborn heart. I'm laying down my plans and picking up Yours. Even when they don't make sense to me. Your will, not mine. I mean it. Mostly. Help me mean it all the way.— Matthew 6:10

Give Us Today Our Daily Bread

Not next month's bread. Not next year's bread. Today's. Jesus is teaching us to depend on God one day at a time.

PRAYERLord, give me what I need today. Not a stockpile of security, but enough for right now. Enough money. Enough strength. Enough patience. Enough grace. Teach me to trust You for tomorrow when tomorrow comes.— Matthew 6:11

Forgive Us as We Forgive Others

Ouch. This one has teeth. Jesus links our forgiveness to our willingness to forgive. Not because God is keeping score, but because unforgiveness locks us in a prison of our own making.

PRAYERForgive me, Father. For the things I did on purpose and the things I didn't realize I was doing. And help me extend that same forgiveness to the people who've hurt me. Even when I don't feel like it. Especially then.— Matthew 6:12

Lead Us Not into Temptation, Deliver Us from Evil

PRAYERGod, I know my weak spots. You know them even better. Keep me away from the things that pull me from You. And when the enemy comes — because he will — fight for me. I'm not strong enough on my own, and I'm done pretending I am.— Matthew 6:13
