Anxiety is one of the most common struggles people face — and Christians are not immune. If your heart races at 2 AM, if your stomach knots before a difficult conversation, if you carry a low hum of worry that never quite goes away — you are not alone, and you are not failing in your faith.
God never commanded us to "stop being anxious" as if it were a light switch. Instead, He gave us something better: an invitation. "Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7). Prayer is how we do that casting. It's not pretending everything is fine — it's bringing the mess to God and letting Him hold it.
Here are seven prayers for when anxiety feels heavy.
1. When Your Mind Won't Stop Racing
Prayer for Anxiety
God, my thoughts are spiraling and I can't make them stop on my own. I need You to intervene. Slow my breathing. Steady my heart. Replace every "what if" with the truth of who You are. You are in control, even when my mind tells me otherwise. I choose to fix my thoughts on You right now.
— Isaiah 26:3
2. When You're Overwhelmed by Tomorrow
Prayer for Anxiety
Father, I'm carrying the weight of tomorrow and it's crushing me today. You told me not to worry about tomorrow because each day has enough trouble of its own. Help me obey that command — not through willpower, but through trust. Give me grace for this moment, this hour, this breath. Tomorrow is Yours.
— Matthew 6:34
3. When Fear Grips Your Body
Prayer for Anxiety
Jesus, anxiety has moved from my mind into my body. My chest is tight, my hands are shaking, my stomach is in knots. You created this body, and You can calm it. Breathe Your peace into every nerve, every muscle, every cell. I am safe in Your hands. I am held. I am not forgotten.
— Psalm 56:3
4. When You Feel Alone in Your Struggle
Prayer for Anxiety
Lord, anxiety is isolating. It makes me feel like no one understands. But You understand. You know every thought before I think it. You collect every tear. Remind me today that I am never alone — that Your Spirit lives inside me and walks with me through the darkest valleys. I don't have to fight this by myself.
— Psalm 139:1-4
5. When You Need to Let Go of Control
Prayer for Anxiety
Father, so much of my anxiety comes from trying to control things that were never mine to control. I confess that I've been holding on too tight — to outcomes, to people, to plans. Today I open my hands and release it all to You. You are God, and I am not. And that is the most freeing truth I know.
— Proverbs 3:5-6
6. A Prayer Based on Philippians 4
Prayer for Anxiety
Lord, Your Word says to be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, to present my requests to You. So here I am, presenting them. I'm anxious about [name it to God]. I'm grateful for [name it to God]. And I ask for Your peace — the peace that surpasses all understanding — to guard my heart and my mind in Christ Jesus.
— Philippians 4:6-7
7. When Anxiety Returns Again
Prayer for Anxiety
Jesus, this feeling is back again. I thought I was past this, but here it is. Instead of being discouraged, I choose to see this as another invitation to come to You. Every time anxiety returns, it's a doorbell — and You're on the other side. So I open the door again. Come in, Lord. Sit with me. Calm the storm one more time.
— Mark 4:39
What the Bible Says About Anxiety
Scripture doesn't dismiss anxiety — it meets us in it. Throughout the Psalms, David poured out his fear, his dread, and his racing thoughts to God. And God never turned him away. The invitation is always the same: bring it to Me.
Here are a few verses to hold onto when anxiety strikes: "When anxiety was great within me, Your consolation brought me joy" (Psalm 94:19). "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18). "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid" (John 14:27).
Prayer is not the only tool for managing anxiety — and there is no shame in seeking professional help, medication, or therapy. God works through counselors and doctors just as powerfully as He works through prayer. But prayer is the foundation. It's the first step and the last resort, all at once.
