How Praying Together Strengthens Relationships

2026-03-12

Want to know the scariest thing I've ever done with another person? It wasn't skydiving or public speaking. It was praying out loud with someone I love.

There's something about praying with another human that strips away every wall. You can't fake it when you're talking to God in front of someone. And that vulnerability? It's exactly what relationships need.

Why It Feels Awkward at First

If praying with your spouse or friend feels weird, that's normal. We're used to performing — saying the right things, looking like we have it together. Prayer blows all of that up.

PRAYERGod, I want to pray with the people I love but I feel awkward about it. Take away my self-consciousness. Help me care more about connecting with You and them than about sounding spiritual. Make it natural. Make it real.— Matthew 18:20

A Prayer to Pray Together

PRAYERLord, we come to You together. Not because we have it figured out, but because we don't. Strengthen this relationship. Show us how to love each other the way You love us — patiently, honestly, sacrificially. And when we fail, help us try again.— Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

When You Don't Know Where to Start

Try this: sit together. One person says what they're thankful for. The other says what they need prayer for. Then just talk to God about it. No King James. No performance. Just honesty.

PRAYERFather, teach us to be vulnerable with each other and with You. Break down the walls we've built. Help us create a habit of coming to You together — not just when things are bad, but when they're good too.— Colossians 3:16
